NSW: Hospitals lack proper waste management
An audit's found that four New South Wales hospitals are using expensive and unnecessarymethods to dispose of non-hazardous waste.
The state Auditor General's Department conducted an audit of Concord and Royal PrinceAlfred hospitals in Sydney, and Cowra and Orange hospitals in the state's mid-west, toassess costs of waste management.
Assistant auditor-general DENIS STREATER says the audit shows the four hospitals areusing unnecessary and expensive methods to dispose of non-hazardous materials such asnappies and blood-free oxygen masks.
Mr STREATER says guidelines on waste management had previously been put on hold byNew South Wales Health because of concerns from waste workers and the threat of industrialaction.
But he says the health department will now lift the moratorium on the guidelines andis committed to improving waste management across the state.
